TW: Sexual Abuse, Child Abuse, Victim Shaming - Catholic League to Victims: Stop Being Crybabies

nonplussedbyreligion:

I’ll just forewarn you that my vocabulary will not be the cleanest in this post.  It is no secret that any form of abuse, but especially abuse done to children are huge anger triggers for me.  Not wanting to be accused of making this shit up, or not being able to find it when and if they take it down, I’ve added a screen shots.  The actual page is here. The first shot is of their Catholic League’s homepage.  The second is what comes up when you click the read more link.  The texts reads:

BOSTON VICTIMS’ SUMMIT BOMBS

Over the weekend, lawyers, columnists, reporters, psychiatrists, and activists attended the “10th Anniversary Celebration & Conference” in Boston; it marked the 10th anniversary of media reports on the Boston clergy sexual abuse scandal.

Commenting on the outcome is Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

A whopping 75 people turned out for the conference, 25 of whom were the speakers. How embarrassing. It’s clear that the professional victims’ lobby is spent. Everyone else has moved on, but those who have an ideological, emotional or financial interest in continuing this saga cannot let go. What a pitiful bunch of malcontents.

This a good sign. Catholics are talking about the announcement that Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Archbishop Edwin O’Brien will become Cardinal Dolan and Cardinal O’Brien next month—they’re not interested in wallowing in negativity.

It’s a well known fact that I despise Bill Donohue, but even for him this is incredibly fucking low.  To rejoice in the fact that the turn out to a victim’s conference was “embarrassing” and call those involved a “pitiful bunch”  is something I didn’t even expect from him.  The image of a crying baby, and the blatant no cry babies meaning of the pictures accompanying this article has moved me to anger.  This is continued victimization of every single person who has been sexually assaulted by a member of the Catholic Church.  Anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse period.  This is demoralizing intellectually and psychologically.  This is what it looks like when the biggest Church in the world takes a stand on who they think is really at fault for their image problems.  Of course I’m going to hear that my statements are big generalizations, but if and when the Pope speaks out against this, I may consider apologizing.  Until then, as far as I see it, the entire Church supports this shit.

Let’s examine the reason for this conference needing to be held at all shall we.  Adult men, representing the Catholic Church in a role of authority, used that power and trust to commit sexual crimes against others, mostly minors.  The failure of victims and their family to PUBLICLY show up to this conference should not need to be explained.  Why would people want to continue the subject themselves to the very institution that was the source of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse?  Bill Donohue is a fucking reprehensible piece of shit.  Everyone who has been sexually abused has an “emotional” interest in seeing that Priests stop molesting children, and that those who did receive just punishment.   However, not everyone wants to stand up in front of assholes like Donohue, and have to explain to him why it’s not ok to simply re-assign, or never talk about the people that carried out the abuse.  Fully realizing that people like him will continue to blame the victim for the shame brought upon the Catholic Church, people are trying their best to move on with their lives and not live as victims.

So while Donohue is showing his hate filled ass by proudly pointing out that Catholics have moved on to happier things, victims of the Church are trying to do the same.  No they are not “wallowing in negativity.”  They have wisely chosen to stay away from assholes like you and the negativity you spew.  Un-FUCKING-believable.  This was an angry blog, not editing so apologizing for typos in advance.~ Kim

[TRIGGER WARNING FOR CHILD ABUSE, RAPE, SEXUAL ASSAULT]

These things should be simple:

1. When, as an adult, you come come across another adult raping a small child, you should a) do everything in your power to rescue that child from the rapist, b) call the police the moment it is practicable.

2. If your adult son calls you to tell you that he just saw another adult raping a small child, but then left that small child with the rapist, and then asks you what he should do, you should a) tell him to get off the phone with you and call the police immediately, b) call the police yourself and make a report, c) at the appropriate time in the future ask your adult son why the fuck he did not try to save that kid.

3. If your underling comes to you to report that he saw another man, also your underling, raping a small child, but then left that small child with the rapist, you should a) call the police immediately, b) alert your own superiors, c) immediately suspend the alleged rapist underling from his job responsibilities pending a full investigation, d) at the appropriate time in the future ask that first underling why the fuck he did not try to save that kid.

4. When, as the officials of an organization, you are approached by an underling who tells you that one of his people saw another of his people raping a small child at the organization, in organization property, you should a) call the police immediately, b) immediately suspend the alleged rapist from his job responsibilities if the immediate supervisor has not already done so, c) when called to a grand jury to testify on the matter, avoid perjuring yourself. At no time should you decide that the best way to handle the situation is to simply tell the alleged rapist not to bring small children onto organization property anymore.
