As a self-described anti-theist, I have problems with pretty much every form of organized religion.  Yes, that includes Islam to a certain point but see here’s the thing…

UNLESS ISLAM OPPRESSES YOU, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL MUSLIMS—ESPECIALLY MUSLIMS OF COLOR—THAT THEIR RELIGION IS EVIL AND WRONG AND SEXIST EVEN IF YOU THINK IT IS.

I know that the majority of you, like me, live in a country where Christianity is the dominant religion.  Christianity is more acceptable for us to deride and dissect and criticize because we live in this culture and are actively oppressed by it.

It also oppresses Muslims.  And Muslims who are people of color even more so.  White atheists in predominately Christian culture are shitheads for tearing down Islam and Muslims.  It’s like, we get beat up on by the same bullly, and then afterwards we turn to the other kid who also got beat up and start hitting him some more.

Come on, admit it.  You’re surprised when you meet a white Muslim because you don’t expect Muslims to be white.  You think of Muslims as people of color; your first thought when you hear the descriptor “Muslims” you think of a non-white person.  I know you do, because I do, because I’m steeped so deeply into the whiteness that my skin has a opalescent glow, because this is the kind of shit that we think.

Atheists, we pride ourselves on being critical thinkers.  Think critically about the situation.  Are you really entitled to speak with any authority on a culture and a religion that you know virtually nothing about?

My problems revolve more around the few othodox jews that I’ve met immediately telling me that I was a slut for not covering my ugly body enough.

Seriously, I was pissed and they immediately fell into the “but evolution is racist against god” and insistence that all of science was racist against their precious religion.

When anytime I bring up science, I’m immediately attacked when I try to explain that the Out of Africa theory is supported by genetic and linguistic evidence by such people…yeah I don’t care about “respecting” their religion. Science is true, and I’m not going to back down and go “you’re right, I’m a slut” because they’re treated badly by other white religious people.

Also I’ve seen plenty of white Muslims, they do exist, and they’re often discriminated against by muslims of color. Similarly, Muslims of lighter color treat black Muslims like shit on a regular basis.

So no, they’re not perfect, not at all. I’m not about to tell a woman that she’s the victim of misogyny, but I’m also not about to accept their beliefs as my own without question—which I don’t get that from women…I get it from men, in any culture. I got it from a Catholic Black Guy, and a Catholic White Guy, I got it from a “Trans”(he insisted that he was a woman inwardly but didn’t want to ‘bother’ with transitioning) Christian Asian guy, and an Orthodox Jew—I -immediately- get the insistence that I “shut my bitch mouth” and accept all of their beliefs about abortion, women’s roles in society, and anything else they’ve interpreted out of their chosen belief system.

You’ll excuse me if I’m not about to set out a hot dinner for these men and instead disagree and keep my own beliefs—which that’s honestly -all- I’ve ever done, and instead I immediately get vicious and threatening replies from them.

Life is not as simple as people like to make it.

Right except for that’s not at all what I was talking about.

Like… at all.

If someone is personally bullying you over religious differences you have every right to stand up to that person.  If someone is trying to impose their religious beliefs on your body and your personal freedom they are absolutely a douchenozzle and should be stood up to and spat at.

All I am saying is that there are misconceptions about Islam that white people like myself have living in this culture that is actively hostile towards them.
