married to trouble: Pro-tip to my fellow white Western atheists: criticism of Islam is in fact racist when you do it.
I learn and I share with you, see.
As a self-described anti-theist, I have problems with pretty much every form of organized religion. Yes, that includes Islam to a certain point but see here’s the thing…
UNLESS ISLAM OPPRESSES YOU, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL MUSLIMS—ESPECIALLY MUSLIMS…
You are nuts…silence in the face of religious intolerance, muslim or otherwise, isn’t tolerance its cowardice
That’s not what I’m saying though. We have every duty to stand up in the face of religious intolerance. Institutional religion enslaves minds. I’m saying that white atheists who live in a non-Muslim culture are not equipped to criticize Islam. An atheist person of color who was raised in an Islamic culture has the right, but not me. Sure I can condemn the actions of fundamentalist Muslims who hurt and destroy other human beings over, but I am not going to use Islam as a scapegoat for their shitty behavior. I can blame fundamentalism, sure, I can call them shitty human beings. But because I am not living in a culture that puts Muslims in a position of privilege above me, I do not have the right to tear them down.
I used to have a different attitude about this, sure. But I just see the racism that pops up when white atheists are discussing Islam and I don’t feel comfortable perpetuating that.
