If now isn’t the “proper time” to discuss how differently our society/legal system treats white criminals and PoC criminals, then when is?
One month from now? Or how about five?
One year?
Two years?
Five?
Ten?
You see, every single time something like this happens (e.g. James Evans killing his whole damn family) people get up in arms if you dare to talk about race. They scream to the heavens about how it’s “not the right time” or how it’s “insulting” that you dare to speak ill of him or bring race into the conversation.
The thing is though, they never specify what the “right time” actually is. They claim that the want to have this conversation, but they keep pushing back the “right time” to have it.
When Trayvon Martin was killed it wasn’t the “right time.”
When Ramarley Graham was killed it wasn’t the “right time.”
When James Holmes shot up a whole movie theater it wasn’t the “right time.”
Even now, after James Evans has killed his whole family and admitted to it, it isn’t the “right time.”
So please people, tell me when is the right time?
When is the right time for us to discuss the fetishization of white male killers in our society?
When is the right time of us to discuss how white children can kill and be given the benefit of the doubt and even in some cases made into sex symbols while children of color are blamed for their own deaths?
When is the right time to discuss how our legal system treats PoC compared to how it treats white people?
When is the right time to discuss how the media fawns over white murderers, compulsively trying to find a reason “why” they would do what they did, while PoC murderers are simply dismissed as being inherently violent?
Tell me when is the “right time” to discuss these things because right now, it’s just looking like y’all are pushing back the goalposts in an effort to avoid the conversation altogether.
